Village life in Wolvercote is about to get better with the launch of a new community cafe.
The volunteer-run project in the new parish room at St Peter’s Church will offer residents cakes, snacks, tea and coffee, and a place to have a chat.
It opens today at the First Turn church and will continue every Tuesday from 2pm to 4.30pm.
The idea came from villagers, pictured above from left, Di Edwards, of Rosamund Road, Teresa Kay, of Home Close, and Kirstie Morton, of Meadow Prospect.
Mrs Edwards, 48, said: “Wolvercote is one of these places where it is quite a close community, but there is absolutely nowhere you can get together and bring all sorts of ages together.
“We thought this would be a good thing for the community. And we thought it would be the ideal place to set it up.”
The three ladies have each invested about £100 in the project with £100 from the proceeds of this year’s Wolvercote Summer Festival.
Miss Kay, 37, said: “Everyone has talked for so long about having a cafe in Wolvercote.”
“There is no more funding imminent so the success of the cafe will depend on the commitment, support and enthusiasm of local people.“ The Rev Viv Bridges said: “There is nothing else like that in the village. We have pubs but there is no cafe where you can sit and have a chat with pals.”
