CHILDREN’S poet laureate and author Julia Donaldson told stories about nature in a special wildlife reading event yesterday.

The Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust event included a visit from The Gruffalo – one of Ms Donaldson’s most popular characters – and a book signing.

About 500 children, parents, and grandparents, attended the storytelling at Sutton Courtenay Environmental Education Centre in Milton Park.

Chris Hannington, head of conservation and education for the county at the trust, said: “Children are losing touch with the natural environment and wildlife and it seemed a really good idea to have Julia down here to help us and teach kids about these things.”

Ms Donaldson added: “It was lovely to have the opportunity to perform some of my stories about plants and animals.

“When we did a story called The Wrong Kind of Bark I was impressed by the children’s knowledge of the items on the nature table.”
