A £67M project to improve Rail services in west Oxfordshire has been welcomed by Prime Minister David Cameron.
The Witney MP called in at Charlbury Railway Station yesterday to inspect the completed Cotswold Line scheme, which has seen a second track laid down, improving connections on the line between Oxford and Worcester.
Mr Cameron unveiled a plaque marking the improvements, and congratulated Network Rail, First Great Western, the Cotswold Line Promotion Group and members of the community for playing their part in the scheme.
He said: “We are going to have a better, faster service as part of the improvements on the line and this is a real boost for West Oxfordshire.”
Since last month, six additional services calling at Charlbury have been running each weekday. And from December, there will be a new morning service from the town to London.
There have also been improvements at the station itself, with a new platform, waiting room and footbridge. Funding has also been secured for a car park extension, which would increase the number of spaces from 150 to 250.
First Great Western managing director Mark Hopwood said: “The presence of the Prime Minister confirms the importance of the rail services for Charlbury, and we were delighted to join him in celebrating the Cotswold Line improvements.
“This event really caps what has been a remarkable period of developments, including service improvements, and the recently approved car park investment for the station.”
