I do hope Mr Douglas has his tin hat at the ready (Letters, October 4) concerning women drivers.
No one could be less liberated than me – indeed there are many things where I prefer male over female in the jobs world, which I dare not list for fear of needing a tin hat myself!
But I do know that as a non-driver, I have missed out on a lot of things because I cannot (am not allowed to) drive. Neither can I now cycle. But, as a passenger on many occasions, I have frequently found women to be extremely conscientious drivers and certainly less likely to take risks than their male counterparts.
I watched one gentleman last week take five attempts to park in a bay – my young driver who had given me a lift parked first go, neatly and evenly between the lines, drove with great skill and had been taught by a female instructor.
If I were allowed to drive, I would wish to drive like this young lady. True, one young lady rather severely pranged our car a few years ago – but perhaps she had a male instructor... and I thought I was sexist against women!
