YOUNGSTERS have been learning how people with disabilities lead normal lives.
Pupils at Aston and Cote CoE Primary School, Cote Road, spent yesterday with members of the Guide Dog Association.
They listened to a talk by a guide dog user, learnt about braille and got to meet a puppy that is training to become a guide dog.
On Monday, the children learnt about physical disabilities and tomorrow they will learn about deafness.
Cara Parry-Jones, 10, said: “It was good to learn how a blind person leads a normal life. I did not realise how hard some things are for them.”
Dan Weston, 11, learnt how to guide a blind person yesterday and said he really enjoyed the day. He said: “I felt a lot of responsibility and was worried in case I did not lead her properly.”
Headteacher Marjorie Ottley said: “The purpose of the disability awareness week is to raise children’s awareness of the different disabilities people face but also to help them to realise that people are all the same, whether they have a disability or not.
“We try to develop children’s compassion and understanding for everyone in all walks of life.”
It was a fantastic day”
