Sir – Having on several occasions cycled between Cumnor and Abingdon on the B4017, I am in absolute accord with Hugh Jaeger’s contention that Wootton needs a cycle track. But so does Farmoor. The fact that there have been more accidents and even one fatality on the B4017 does not surprise me. Neither does it surprise me that there have been fewer on the B4044, because the B4044 is narrow, with poor visibility on bends and fast-moving traffic, despite Mr Jaeger’s contention that most drivers stay within the speed limit. There are few people who dare to risk cycling along it, although logically it should be the fastest route between Witney and Oxford.

It is too dangerous even for Stagecoach to agree to the installation of a bus stop at Hill End, the county’s flagship environmental centre. What kind of message does that send to local children? That Hill End is the place to learn about sustainability but, because they can’t cycle and because there is no footpath, mum or dad will have to drive them there? As for the £2m Hugh Jaeger supposes will come from our taxes: I apologise for the publication of this out-of-the-air sum. It was suggested by a member of the team as a worst-case scenario figure and I, in turn, provided it. More realistic estimates range from £800,000-£1m.

But none of these figures is really relevant. What is needed is a proper feasibility study and to fund this, readers might like to have a look at the very brief and compelling film outlining the case for the project and then to vote online for £6,000 from the NatWest Community Fund: http://communityforce.natwest.com/project/3306.
