A LANDMARK Oxford pub will reopen this month, in its third incarnation in four years.

The White House on Botley Road has been undergoing a facelift for 12 months as it becomes The One restaurant.

It will become the third separate venture to inhabit The White House, which is owned by Punch Taverns, in the past four years, the first closing in 2007.

The latest landlord, 30-year-old Raymond Chu, is convinced he’s on to a winner.

He said: “It is all falling into place. We are definitely excited.

Mr Chu also runs Paddyfields restaurant in Hythe Bridge Street and The One will serve Western cuisine with Chinese influences.

He said the refit had taken 12 months as they had encountered some structural problems.

He added: “It is definitely a very good location.

“It is quite rare for a property in Oxford to have its own parking space.

“We have got plenty of outdoor space and so far we have had quite a lot of interest from people who want to have their wedding here.”

The garden will even feature a pond with a waterfall.

The pub was boarded up in 2007 before reopening in 2009. It then closed again in 2010 .

A spokesman for Punch Taverns said: “The pub closed in December 2010 due to the previous licensee taking the decision to leave the business.

“We look forward to working in partnership with the new licensee to build a successfu business.”

West Oxford resident Robert Mitchell, who lives on Mill Street, said: “I would much prefer to have any building in use.

“I think it does have an impact if it keeps closing. To have a building boarded up creates a blight on the local area.

“I used to go to the White House lots but it is very difficult for pubs to be economically viable in this area.”
