DIDCOT Railway Centre’s smallest working steam locomotive will be signing off at a special event on Saturday.
Saddle tank locomotive Trojan’s boiler certificate is about to expire, meaning it will not be allowed to run again until an overhaul is carried out. So it will be the star attraction at the centre for its last day in steam.
The veteran locomotive, pictured with driver Mick Jarvis, was built in 1897 for shunting work at Newport Docks in South Wales. It was saved for preservation and arrived at Didcot in April 1968. Restoration work to allow the engine to steam again was completed in 2002.
After Saturday’s event, the locomotive will go on static display until funds are available to remove the boiler for repairs.
