A FIGHT organised on Facebook saw 30 teenagers brawling at the Witney Feast.

Yobs, some believed to be armed with martial arts nunchucks, were involved in the fracas at about 9pm on Monday at the Leys recreation ground in Station Lane.

The brawl left a 19-year-old man with a suspected broken nose and cuts to his lips.

A 17-year-old girl was also punched in the cheek.

Two teenagers were arrested on suspicion of taking part in the fight.

Pc Andrew Ball said “We believe the fight may have been prearranged on Facebook.

“I would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the fight or who has captured footage of it on their mobile phone.

“It is believed somebody may have been carrying a set of martial arts nunchucks, which would be quite distinctive.”

Witney Insp Helen Roberts added: “It was a public fracas and lots of people will have been around and about at the time.

“We want to hear from anybody who can provide us with witness statements.

“There are always things that float around on Facebook, but there had been some Facebook chatter about this.”

Dismissing the suggestion of a gang feud, she said: “I do not think we have got gangs operating, but what we might have is two factions or groups of individuals that clearly have animosity between them.”

An 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy from the Witney area have been arrested on suspicion of ABH and released on police bail until October 10.

Insp Roberts said that policing on the night had been adequate and said that there were no other crimes “of significance” on Monday.

She added: “The Witney Feast is a huge family event and we want it to be a safe event.

“We do police it, but we can’t be everywhere and we rely on the public to give information so we can deal with such incidents robustly. We had six officers there on foot, which is quite a few in an area like West Oxfordshire. Generally, this is a safe event.”

She said police believe all of those involved were aged between 16 and 19 and were from the Witney area and not connected to the fair.

“There is no intelligence about drugs being involved,” she added.
