ABINGDON’S cultural and historical sites will be open to visitors on September 10 and 11 in a celebration of the town’s heritage.

The annual Heritage Open Weekend allows visitors free access to properties that are not usually open or normally charge a fee.

There will be tours of old pubs and cellars, walking tours, and performances by a medieval jester, Morris dancing and children’s activities, Organiser Alastair Fear said: “This was not an easy year as the County Hall is closed for refurbishment, and the Guildhall and Abbey Buildings had been pre-booked for weddings, but that gave us the opportunity to look elsewhere for new ideas.”

Chief executive of English Heritage Dr Simon Thurley said: “It is organised by local people who dedicate their spare time to opening properties and staging activities. It is their knowledge and enthusiasm that makes Heritage Open Days happen.”
