I WROTE to View Points recently, which was printed (Oxford Mail, August 8) about the man who is no longer being allowed to take his garden waste in a wheelbarrow to Redbridge Recycle depot because it is said to be dangerous, under health and safety rules.

I go to the city centre quite frequently and have noticed how dangerous it is in Queen Street with people of all ages walking all over the road, some with pushchairs and mobility scooters, only to be confronted by a bus coming up behind them.

This street must be a driver’s nightmare.

I am very surprised that an accident has not happened before now.

I ask: is it a pedestrian street or a bus route? If the answer is both, then it makes a fool of the phrase health and safety.

At one end of the Queen Street, 100 yards away, are the county council offices and the other end, again 100 yards in St Aldate’s, you have the Town Hall and city council offices.

Surely the safety factor could not have been overlooked by the powers that be.

Bikes riding up and down are very seldom checked, and taxis using Queen Street are also another hazard to the people.

This time of year, there are many students from overseas to add to the congestion in and around Queen Street during the day and evening hours.

I feel that there is an accident waiting to happen.

In conclusion, I wonder if the man with a wheelbarrow was to walk down Queen Street, would he be stopped?
