Cabbies and the police are joining forces to crack down on fare dodgers – by releasing mugshots snapped by CCTV cameras inside taxis.
Officers today released the first photograph, right, which shows two men they want to speak to over an unpaid fare in Oxford.
They hope the new tactic, and the clear images, will help people report the suspects, and act as a deterrent.
This particular pair got into a black hackney cab at Oxford train station and travelled to Edgecombe Road, Headington, where they allegedly made off, between 4.50pm and 5.10pm on Thursday May 26, without paying their £10.65 fare.
Pc Lucy Auger said: “This is the first time an image has been released from an in-car CCTV camera in an Oxford taxi.
“I would like to hear from anyone who recognises either of the men or saw two men running away.”
Anyone with information should call Pc Auger on 08548 505505 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
