Grow-your-own fan Vic Girling was among those honoured at the Banbury Flower & Produce Show at the weekend.

He won the cabbages category at Sunday’s Market Place event, which attracted more than 420 exhibitors showing fruit, vegetables, flowers and preserves.

The 69-year-old Sinclair Avenue, Banbury resident, whose wife Susan won a floral category, said: “It was a very enjoyable day. I was impressed with the entries, it must have meant a lot of hard work.

“I’ve been growing vegetables for a long time, about 60 years. It’s something I’d definitely recommend.”

Overall winners included Margaret Hughes for floral arrangements, Jennifer Hughes for cakes and preserves and Des England for fruit and vegetables.

Town Mayor Alistair Milne Home said: “We must thank everybody who exhibited in such a wonderful show.

“The quality of the exhibits reflected the sheer hard work that has gone into it.”
