CHILDREN from across Oxford have been given a taste of the rock and roll lifestyle this week.

Oxford High School has been hosting courses teaching children between the ages of 11 and 16 what it is like to be in a band.

The Passion for . . . Being in a Band course was run by Alex Monteleone.

Rocking out under the supervision of the seasoned musician was Karen Shamgunov, from North Oxford. The 14-year-old, who lists Led Zeppelin as his influence, said he had enjoyed honing his skills as a lead and bass guitarist alongside other promising musicians.

He said: “It’s been good to learn how to communicate with other people through rhythm and sound.

“ It’s been a great learning experience.”

Helena Bradley, 14, from Kennington, said: ”It’s been fun learning how the music fits in with what other people are playing.”

The course runs until the end of the week, when band members will perform at a special Friday Festival in front of family and friends.
