OXFORD United have rejected a bid from Luton for star striker James Constable.
But the Conference side, who showed interest in the former Shrewsbury forward last season without making a formal offer, have been told their offer was “nowhere near enough”.
United chairman Kelvin Thomas revealed that a non-League side had made a bid for Constable, but that it had instantly been turned down.
“We received a bid for James Constable from a Conference club, but it was nowhere near enough,” Thomas told the Oxford Mail.
Constable joined the U’s in 2008, initially on a year-long loan from Shrewsbury.
The following summer he agreed a permanent move, and at the end of last season signed an improved three-year deal with Oxford.
He has scored 69 goals in 141 appearances for United.
