THE wait is over for children hoping to clamber all over Headington’s latest attraction.

A play area in Bury Knowle Park has been completed and is already being used a month ahead of its official opening.

It has a Chronicles of Narnia theme and cost £115,000.

Ann King, 44, who was on a return visit to Oxford with her children, was impressed with the play park and braved the rain to take them there.

She said: “I think it is wonderful. I played here as a child and it is a vast improvement.”

Her son, Edward, six, said: “I think it is good. I like the rope bridge.”

The play area features a timber multi-play castle, a basket swing, a large sandpit and a climbing net.

Natural timber has been used to construct the play equipment.

The play area also features a seat sculpted by artist Matt Cave from a dead cedar tree, depicting characters from the Narnia books of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings.

Oxford City Council will officially open the site in September.

Work began on the play area in February after an 18-month consultation period involving children and the Friends of Bury Knowle Park.

The development is part of a £2.5m play area refurbishment programme by the council.
