OXFORD’S most famous detective is about to return to duty on our TV screens with a new face and police rank.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the first episode of Inspector Morse, ITV is making a one-off special, entitled Endeavour, about a younger version of the detective made famous by the late John Thaw.

The programme takes its name from Endeavour, Morse’s first name, which was only revealed to viewers in the last of the 33 Inspector Morse episodes made for TV, shown in 2000. The drama will be filmed in Oxford this autumn and will be broadcast on ITV1 early next year. It will star Shaun Evans as Dc Morse, investigating the disappearance of a schoolgirl in 1965.

The script was inspired by a short story Oxford author Colin Dexter, the creator of Inspector Morse, wrote for a national newspaper last Christmas.

Mr Dexter, 80, said: “I wasn’t terribly enthusiastic at first, but I thought it would be a nice story to tell.”
