IN YOUR article (Oxford Mail, July 30, about Sainsbury’s opening a new store in Cowley, various people are quoted who obviously use their own transport, and who comment on how bad parking is already. But you may get a different picture if you talk to those people patiently waiting for the No 10 or 16 buses.

Shopping bags will tell you where they have been shopping.

Also, older people are more likely to need a Sainsbury’s close to their homes.

If, as it seems, B&Q is either downsized or ousted from the John Allen Centre (or according to rumour, moved to the old post office sorting office on the corner of Hollow Way and Garsington Road), Sainsbury’s could become a good place to shop.

Those who can afford to shop by car have a much better choice of where to shop anyway, so it shouldn’t make much difference to them. It is different for us oldies on the bus, however. There is no choice for us because so few of the buses actually go to the large supermarkets.

Perhaps whoever takes over the new premises will run a shuttle service for shoppers.

That would keep some of the cars off the road and also help those of us who don’t drive, to shop in comfort.
