OXFORDSHIRE has always played a vital role in supporting our country’s military.
It can boast RAF stations at Benson and Brize Norton, as well as a big military presence in Abingdon, Didcot and Bicester.
Over the previous century we have also seen military airfields in Bicester and Upper Heyford.
And county officials are busy preparing for the arrival of 2,600 troops and their families to Brize Norton from this autumn with the closure of RAF Lyneham.
So, what better time to get behind a campaign to cement Oxfordshire’s role in supporting our service men and women.
The proposed £60m centre at Bicester would help inspire our youngsters, remind people of the bravery of Oxfordshire’s airmen and also boost our county’s economy.
Oxfordshire is already on the map as a tourist destination for its university buildings, designer shopping and stately homes.
How wonderful it would be to add a museum and educational centre to our list of heritage attractions.
It is time for the county to shout about its proud military history.
