A HOST of eco-friendly vehicles travelled from Oxford to London yesterday to promote clean energy.

The Bridgestone Eco Rally included a Lotus sports car fuelled by wine and cheese whey and a VW Beetle powered by gas from dung.

Two electric-assisted bikes and one of Oxford’s hybrid buses also made the 70-mile route, which kicked off from Broad Street.

The rally, aimed at promoting alternatives to petrol and diesel fuels, is in its fifth year but it is the first time it has started in Oxford.

Bridgestone UK spokesman Andy Dingley said: “It went incredibly well. We had a great turn-out.

Mr Dingley said the public support meant the eco rally may come back to Oxford in the future.

It started in Oxford because this year the rally has partnered with Oxford Brookes University.

Students at the university are developing an electric racing car to contest the Formula Student racing championship next year.

The eco rally is organised by Revolve, which promotes zero-emission transport.
