COUNTRYSIDE lovers took to the fields to enjoy the Oxfordshire County and Thame Show.

Saturday’s event, on the outskirts of Thame, has a strong focus on countryside activities and featured dog shows, horse riding and sheep shearing.

But there were also fairground rides and motorbike displays to entertain families.

Melanie Elston, 43, of Thame, said: “The animals and the farm activities make it a unique event.

“I particularly enjoyed the motobike display. It was just inspiring watching the youngsters doing something very brave and team-like.”

The show started about 140 years ago as a ploughing competition between neighbouring farmers.

It has grown into a large-scale event that attracts thousands each year.

Julie-Ann Wilson, 40, of Yarnton, said: “Every year it gets bigger and better.

“We have got horses so we have mainly come to watch the showjumping, but it is also a great family day out.”

She was there with her husband, Andrew, 34, and their children, Madilyne, 11, and Drew, six.

Mr Wilson said: “It is bigger and better than previous years and it is a nice family day out. There are beers for dad and rides for the kids – it has something for everyone.”

Drew said: “I enjoyed the bucking bronco because it’s funny falling off.”

Nikki Henderson, of Tythrop Park, Thame, said the show got better every year. “The show is a lovely day out and it is not too big, so you do not have to walk miles,” she added.

“The importance of the event is that it brings the community together.”

Show organiser Mike Howes said: “We aim to improve every year and I think this year went better than previous years.
