Oxford Town Hall, which dominates the centre of Oxford, is easy to take for granted and just pass by without entering its magnificent interior. This Grade II listed building has much to offer and visitors are always welcome, especially in the little café at the back of the building and the gallery next door. It’s here that local artists can display their work at a very reasonable fee, and visitors can stop to admire their work.

At the moment a series of photographs by local photographer Jonathan Brown decorate the passage between the gallery and the café.

He has entitled the collection Oxford: Faces and Places, as the photographs all capture a small snapshot of the city and the people who inhabit it. They are not the usual ‘Oxford shots’, which is what makes them eminently collectable, particularly as they are all for sale at a very reasonable price. Indeed, they would be the perfect purchase for anyone who seeks several reasonably priced pictures to decorate a room.

They include a shot of Oxford’s skyline at dusk, when the setting sun is adding a backdrop of red. Perhaps this shot could be called classic Oxford, but the rest focus on fragments of the city, its statues, women in conversation, a pair of hands folded and still, and a Victorian street lamp against a grey sky.

Jonathan has an excellent eye for detail and ability to create a worthwhile composition from the world around him — which includes architecture and statues that ornament the roof tops.

The Town Hall’s little café serves a jolly good cup of coffee and a selection of home-made cakes and snacks — it’s well worth stopping there for light refreshment having viewed Jonathan’s pictures in the adjacent passageway.
