A ROAD was closed by police after chemical had to be removed from an East Oxford house.

Police, ambulances and fire engines were called to the house in Rectory Road at about 12.30pm on Monday following reports chemicals were being kept in a room.

A source told the Oxford Mail the chemicals could have been used in a possible suicide attempt.

At 6.15pm, officers closed the entire road for an hour as they removed three chemicals in small containers from the room.

The properties on either side of the house were evacuated during the operation. Nobody was injured during the incident.

A 22-year-old man was later detained under the Mental Health Act. It is not thought he was in the room at the time.

Police would not say which chemicals they removed from the house, but insisted there was now no danger to neighbours.
