When brain storming centenary events it was suggested that we could have a flotilla of boats on the Thames. On Saturday 11 June 2011 this was partly realised when a flotilla of one sailed down the river. On board were 15% of Girlguiding Oxfordshire’s adult volunteer leaders.

This was the first of what is hoped to be many GLAM (Guide Leaders Are Marvellous) events. The purpose was to thank those who generously give their time, energy and commitment to guiding in Oxfordshire. Especially for the extra everyone found to give during the Girlguiding UK centenary celebrations.

Carol Dunne County Commissioner welcomed everyone on board. Carol quoted the Bishop of Buckinghamshire who talked about “graceful generosity” not grace as in ballet, but in being faithful and holding strong to our values to help those younger and often vulnerable. Carol thanked everyone for their generosity of time, energy and much more.

Special thanks were given to Kate Coldwell, Lynne Nickerson, Sarah Pembroke and Fran the committee who made it happen.

As we cruised down the river, the rain held off and there was a party atmosphere. Talk and laughter filled the air. People said that they were kept involved in guiding by the fun, surprises, the friendships and the commitment. There was definitely a buzz of friendship on the boat. Unfortunately all too soon the fun came to end and it was time to disembark and go home.

Until the next time.
