A “SHOPPING list” of roads needing repairs and improvements in Marston is to be sent to Oxfordshire County Council by parish councillors.

The list, which currently includes seven potholed stretches of road, will be whittled down to five and sent to the council’s highways department.

Charlie Haynes, chairman of Old Marston Parish Council, said: “This is a kind of shopping list, or wish list, of all the roads we would like repairing if the council had the money.

“At our next meeting, we’re going to decide on the top five, then give that to the highways authority at the county council.”

Among the roads included are Raymund Road, Ponds Lane and Arlington Drive, which all need resurfacing, he said.

Mr Haynes said: “They are riddled with potholes and have just deteriorated over the years.

“The council have been pretty good with coming and filling in the urgent repairs when we have asked, but this is about the structure of the roads. We know they don’t have the money, we just wanted to show what would be done if it could be done.”

Other improvements on the wish list include the installation of a pavement at the end of Elsfield Road and the removal of traffic-calming chicanes.

Mr Haynes said: “In Elsfield Road, there’s a cemetery at the end that a lot of people travel to and from. But there’s no pavement for them to walk along on the left-hand side, so we feel it would be safer to have a pavement rather than just a grass verge.”

In February, the county council announced it would cut its transport budget, including roads, by £13m. It now stands at £43.3m.

Rodney Rose, the cabinet member for transport, said the council was battling the effects of recent harsh winters.

He said: “We’re on top of the safety repairs to roads and are now focusing on going through a series of larger schemes to repair roads by the end of October.

“We already have £9m of repairs identified in our repair programme and all of our highways are being looked at on a daily basis.”

More than 17,000 potholes have been repaired since December.
