RESIDENTS in an Abingdon Street elected their morris dancing mayor as part of a historic tradition.

For the fifth year running, Robert Cox, centre, was elected Mock Mayor of Ock Street in the ceremony organised by Abingdon Traditional Morris Dancers on Saturday. He polled 78 votes, beating challenger Bob Beaver by 23 votes. Last year’s runner-up Harry Knight got 27.

The ballot, held at the Brewery Tap pub, is open to anyone living in the street.

Mr Cox, 62, of St Mary’s Grange, said: “I feel honoured to have won for a fifth time. My family are all from the Ock Street area and it’s a lovely tradition which has just kept going.”
