Oxford United fans, players and chiefs are relishing the chance to take on bitter rivals Swindon Town.

The two teams have a historic rivalry but have not faced each other in the league since the 2000/01 campaign.

However, the sides will meet again following Swindon’s relegation to League Two last season.

The fixture list was unveiled yesterday, showing the teams face each other in Swindon on August 20 and in Oxford on March 3.

Tempers have flared between the two clubs in the past, but fans are hoping for an electric but peaceful atmosphere.

Mark Sennett, chairman of U’s supporters group OxVox, said: “I was not born the last time we won in Swindon and I have waited all my life to see Oxford win there.

“It will have a wonderful atmosphere and it’s normally a very tense game. If you have never seen it, it is something to behold.”

He added: “There is the element in football where there is still trouble, but we are very confident that the club will work with the police and get it right.”

The last time Oxford United beat Swindon Town away was on February 24, 1973. Oxford United have only won once in 25 away games against Swindon.

Fan Malcolm Baker, 59, of Long Hanborough, said: “I think the atmosphere will be one that has not been experienced at the Kassam Stadium for a league game.

“There is a lot of banter between the fans. I don’t think there is anything to be worried about.”

Fellow supporter Zac Knowles, 18, of Middle Barton, said: “It is the first time I will ever see Oxford play them and I can’t wait for it.”

He said he will return early from a holiday to France to see the August game, adding: “This game means everything to me.”

Oxford United players were also looking forward to the game.

Right-back Damian Batt said: “It will be a great atmosphere, and I’m sure both sets of fans will behave themselves.”

Oxford United chairman Kelvin Thomas also believes the game will not be soured by trouble.

He said: “It is a big rivalry. However, the clubs get on very well and we are looking forward to the fixture.

“I think there will be a sell-out crowd, or a close to sell out crowd, which will have a positive impact on the cash.

“However, that may be mitigated by the other costs of putting on the fixture – policing and potential additional stands.”

Oxford police commander Supt Amanda Pearson said policing plans were still at an early stage and specifics were not yet available.

But she said: “Both Thames Valley Police and Oxford United have made it clear that unacceptable behaviour is not welcome at the ground.

“We worked together last season to secure convictions and banning orders on those that were intent on causing disorder, and are looking forward to a trouble-free and successful season for Oxford United.”

Other notable games include Bristol Rovers at home on October 8 and away on February 18, and Cheltenham Town at home on November 26 and away on March 24.

Oxford United will also play Northampton Town at the Kassam on December 17 and away on April 7.
