PLANS for a £130,000 overhaul of a Blackbird Leys play area which could see a skate park return to the estate after two years have been unveiled.

Oxford City Council is planning to revamp the Pegasus Road playground later this year.

Initial designs include a £60,000 skate park to replace the Cuddesdon Way park knocked down in 2009 to make way for a nursery Skaters from the estate have been forced to travel to skate parks across the city, or to Abingdon and Thame, or use pavements.

Children and parents were asked what they thought of initial plans at a consultation at Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre on Wednesday.

Skater Ryan Justice, 13, of Greater Leys, said he was glad the skatepark was being considered.

He said: “I’ve been skating about a year and I have to do it in the street or go to Cutteslowe.

“I think the plans look good but they could maybe add some more stuff. Some of the bits look quite low.

“But it could be good for people who have never skated before.”

His mum Dawn O’Mahony added: “Skateboarding is really getting popular at the moment so I think it is a good thing. It will be nice to have this so close to home so Ryan doesn’t have to go all the way to Cutteslowe.”

Last year, the council spent £90,000 improving the play area in Cuddesdon Way, where new equipment included a large scramble net, swings, toddler swings and a rope roundabout.

The latest playground revamp is part of the council’s £2.5m programme to upgrade aging play areas across the city.

The designs have been put together with the help of Groundwork Thames Valley.

Project manager Jamie Murray said: “It’s really early days, but we are looking at starting work in December For more information or to comment, call 01895 832662 or email oxfordplay@groundwork.org.uk
