EIGHT weeks ago dad-of-four Andy Lee was given eight weeks to live, after the cancer he had battled spread to his liver, lungs and spine.

On Saturday, he watched with pride as his son Jake, 17, leapt from a plane to raise cash for Cancer Research UK.

The Didcot glazing firm boss said: “I am extremely proud of Jake, and all of them, for what they have done. It has been an emotional time for the family.”

The 51-year-old was treated for a malignant melanoma – a form of skin cancer – on his right arm four years ago and in January had surgery to remove a tumour from it. But just over eight weeks ago, he was given the devastating news that the cancer had spread and was inoperable.

Mr Lee, who runs Didcot Glass & Glazing in Moses Winter Way, Wallingford, said: “We have raised money in the past for charities, but it means more now.”

He said: “My oncologist said I had only eight weeks to live and my eight weeks are up, but I look and feel fine so I hope I can keep going for as long as possible.”

St Birinus School sixth form student Jake made the 13,000ft jump at Weston-on-the-Green airfield near Bicester on Saturday with four family friends.

Together, they have so far raised more than £8,000 for the charity.

He said: “I know no amount of money is going to be able to help him directly, but it would be nice to help other families and people affected by cancer.

“When the plane reached 10,000ft I felt quite nervous, but once we had jumped the adrenaline kicked in.

“There was a lot of pressure on me because people raised so much money – the support has been amazing and people who don’t earn much money have given large amounts. It has been crazy.”

Mr Lee’s wife, mum-of-three Sarah, 44, said: “I’m amazed that Jake’s friends at St Birinus have been so generous. Jake has never done anything like this in his life before so we are all so proud of him.

“Andy is very well known and has worked in the area all his life so lots of people know him and want to support him.”

She said she suspected her husband may have got the tumour from working outside as a carpenter as a young man.

They are also parents to Adam, 15 and Jasmin, eight. Mr Lee has a daughter, Vikki Agnew, 26, from his first marriage.

Cancer Research UK spokesman Victoria Gilham said: “Jake’s original target was £800 and he has raised more than £3,300 personally.

“That is a staggering amount of money for anyone to raise, but all the more impressive by someone so young.”
