PLANS for a controversial new Oxford University chemistry block are expected to be approved by city councillors tonight.

Officers have recommended the Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory on the north side of South Parks Road be demolished for a new lab.

The Victorian Group of the Oxfordshire Architectural and Historical Society lodged objections to the plans in March, labelling the building ‘too large and aggressive’.

In response to the objections, changes were made to the shape of the proposed building.

The laboratory is expected to include a lecture theatre, teaching and research laboratories, stores, workshops and a cafe on three levels below ground and four levels above, plus a roof level plant room.

The proposed building will include 15 car parking and 408 cycle parking spaces.

An underground pedestrian tunnel would be built under South Parks Road to connect to an existing chemistry research laboratory on the other side.

A decision will be made at a west area planning committee meeting at 5pm.
