Vale of White Horse District Council has elected Alison Thomson as its new chairman.

Ms Thomson, a Conservative who represents Faringdon and the Coxwells, has served on the council since 1999 and takes over from Beth Fleming.

Sue Marchant, a Liberal Democrat councillor for Grove, is now vice chairman, following the meeting on Wednesday.

The new chairman’s chosen charities for the year are Help for Heroes and South and Vale Carers.

Matthew Barber, who represents the Hanneys Ward, and has been Conservative group leader since 2009, was voted in as the new council leader.

Mr Barber said: “This is a significant change for the council and I’m delighted to be taking up the role as leader.

“We have already started to put our ambitious plans in place and will give a new direction to the Vale of White Horse, working with local people and businesses to strengthen our economy and our communities."

A new cabinet made up of Mr Barber and four other Tories was also elected after the party took control of the council from the Liberal Democrats in the May 5 elections.
