As John Fray said in last Tuesday’s Oxford Mail, the shutting down of BBC broadcasts from Oxford would deprive the city of its dedicated programmes. But it would also be a great loss to the whole of the South Midlands, which would no longer be locally covered.
This would affect an area from Northamptonshire to the M4 corridor, and from High Wycombe to Swindon.
To most of us, Southampton feels remote, because it is remote, and we will be offered programmes of little interest, covering events along the South Coast and local football.
Oxford is already very poorly served, with only about 10 minutes of TV news in each bulletin, with the exception of Fridays.
Common sense would say, close the Southampton studio and expand Oxford’s, leaving the South Coast’s news to Meridian.
But, of course, that would be far too sensible.
