AMERICA’S First Lady Michelle Obama will visit Oxford next week as part of a presidential visit to the UK.

US President Barack Obama and his wife will arrive in London on Tuesday, after accepting an invitation from the Queen to make a state visit.

Mrs Obama will visit Oxford University on Wednesday and talk to school pupils about higher education.

She will meet children from London’s Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School and take part in a question-and-answer session.

A group of 35 pupils from the girls’ secondary school will be visiting Oxford for the day to find out about university life.

The university’s vice-chancellor Prof Andrew Hamilton will host the event, which was arranged at Mrs Obama’s suggestion.

Prof Hamilton said: “We look forward immensely to welcoming the First Lady to the university and to sharing with her and the school students something of what makes Oxford and the education it offers so special.”

The girls will visit university departments and colleges and take part in career discussions before Mrs Obama arrives at the end of the day.

Mrs Obama first met girls from the school when she accompanied her husband on his first official visit to London in April 2009.

During a surprise visit, she urged the pupils to “be the best that you can be”.

In February last year a group of London students, including one from Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School, were invited to the White House after winning a US Embassy Black History Month essay contest.

Next week’s state visit comes ahead of the G8 summit of world leaders at the French resort of Deauville, Normandy, on Thursday and Friday.

Meanwhile, it is reported that London Mayor and former Henley MP Boris Johnson plans to confront President Obama during his visit to London over millions of pounds owed by the US Embassy in unpaid congestion charges.

Several embassies refuse to pay the charge for driving in central London, claiming they are exempted from local taxes under diplomatic immunity rules. They are thought to owe £51m in unpaid fees. The US share is said to be £5.5m.

Mr Johnson said: “Maybe when President Obama’s hors d’oeuvre plate is whisked away he will find a bill for £5.5m.”

Previously, the US Embassy has said it considers the congestion charge to be a tax.
