A NEW dementia unit has been opened at an Oxfordshire nursing home.

The Oxford Beaumont Nursing Home, in Boars Hill, officially unveiled its new seven-bed facility yesterday.

Manager Sue Knight said: “Before, we only had nursing and residential care, so anybody who developed dementia wasn’t allowed to stay here so we had to transfer them to another home which is obviously upsetting for their family and distressing for the resident.

“We can now just move residents to our new dementia unit so everything stays familiar to them, as continuity is paramount.”

Nurse Adeola Odeniyi said: “I have been a nurse for 28 years now and here I feel I can really make a difference to people’s lives.”

Senior carer Juan Wang said: “Oxford Beaumont has a really homely feeling. The residents are always telling us how comfortable they feel living here. We treat them like family really, but always encourage them to also maintain their independence.”

The nursing home currently has five occupants of the new unit, and 40 other residents.
