WALLINGFORD’S wi-fi and website project has helped the market town download a prestigious award.

The Wallingford Partnership worked with South Oxfordshire District Council and the town council on projects including developing a town website, wi-fi access, leaflets for new trails around the town, and new signs and information boards.

It received an Action for Market Towns South East zone award following its entry entitled Exploiting Wallingford’s Rich History.

Two years ago, the partnership received a £100,000 grant from South Oxfordshire matched by another £100,000 from the South East England Development Agency.

Derrick Hoare, 70, of Brookmead Drive, Wallingford, chairman of the Wallingford Partnership, said: “This project has demonstrated what can actually be achieved when a group of highly motivated people get together with an objective of delivering a very complex project, by using their skills and the resources of other organisations.”

The partnership will now attend a conference on July 1 in Dorking, Surrey, to receive the award.

If the partnership wins the best market town project category for the South East zone, it will then go through to the national final in Chippenham, Wiltshire, in October.

Mr Hoare added: “We won’t get any more money, even if we win the final, but we are delighted that our work, and the work of our partners in this project, has been recognised in this way.”
