MORE than 200 children turned up on the first day of a three-week summer play scheme at Didcot Youth Centre in 1983. One of the many activities was making candles under the direction of youth worker Ken Chrisp, seen with some of the youngsters in the first picture.

Pupils at Greenmere Junior School, in the second picture, were in the top class when it came to swimming. More than 60 of them, aged seven to 11, had won bronze and silver survival awards in 1983. The toughest part was to swim 50 yards in pyjamas and a jumper in under four minutes.

Didcot Rotary Club president Paul Tappin, right, is seen in the third picture handing out cheques to representatives of three voluntary groups – from left, Gaynor Phillips, of the Ambulance League of Friends, Terry Moylan, of the Gateway Club for the handicapped, and Ruth O’Neill, of the Ladygrove Old People’s Centre.
