MEMORIES of the historical pageant that was staged in Oxford in 1907 live on.
Brian Colley, of Marston Road, Oxford, has a copy of the official souvenir programme which he inherited from an elderly neighbour.
Ron Tombs, of Farm Road, Abingdon, sparked our interest in the event when he sent in a picture postcard produced to advertise the pageant.
It depicted a scene in 1160 when King Henry II handed over Oxford’s charter.
Mr Colley’s programme, a weighty document stretching to 60 pages, starts by listing the names of hundreds of people who were involved in organising the week-long celebrations.
There are then detailed descriptions of the historical events in Oxford to be performed, followed by pictures taken during months of rehearsal as the cast perfected their roles.
The programme ends with 11 pages of advertisements, including one for Elliston & Cavell, the department store in Magdalen Street, Oxford, which later became Debenhams.
