THERE were cheers all round at one Brownie group this week, as they celebrated receiving £500 from the Red Nose Community Cash fund.

The Seventh Headington Brownies, based in Wood Farm, will spend the money on new sports and arts equipment.

Unit leader Gaynor Pollard, pictured centre, said: “This is fantastic, we will be spending all the money on craft and sports equipment.

“Half of the money will be used on aprons. You might think they are really cheap, but when you have to buy 24 of them, it is a huge amount. And one you can’t really justify buying at the start.”

The unit has been going for three years and is based in Wood Farm Primary School in Titup Drive.

Ms Pollard said: “We are a very new unit. We were originally based in the Wood Farm Community Centre, but that got knocked down.

“We are hoping to be in the first group of people that get to use the new building when it is ready. So, maybe some of the money could even be spent on a laminator to properly display some of the girls’ work on the walls.”

The unit currently has 17 girls aged between seven and 10.

Ms Pollard said: “There used to be a Brownie group here years ago, but it unfortunately has a history of failing.

“I always wanted to open one up in Wood Farm and we are all determined to make it a success.”

She added: “I am so excited about it all. Now we can put together a wish list of things we really need.

“I am delighted we got the money and I am delighted to just give more to the girls that really need us.”
