Royal weddings are the height of pomp and pageantry, a unique celebration of British heritage and the envy of the world.

And if London had the procession, and the splendour of Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace, here in Oxfordshire we had something even better – real community spirit.

The wedding united young and old from Woodstock to Wallingford.

Our village halls and community centres played the part of the palace and each and every resident was a celebrity guest.

And it was more fancy dress than wedding dress out here in the shires.

Scores of street parties got neighbours talking and family gatherings brought generations together.

Yes, there will be those that will debate the costs, the guest list and even the point.

But we challenge even the most ardent Republican not to smile as they look at the fantastic pictures of our communities celebrating.

And if ever a pick-me-up was needed, it is now.

As we watched our future King and Queen tie the knot, we could forget about the cuts and conflicts that have dominated in recent weeks.

They will all still be there when the fanfares fade but for now here’s to Will and Kate. We wish you every happiness.
