Sir – I must confess to a wry smile when I saw your report informing us that some speed limits in the Witney area are being reduced. I am not alone in being concerned for some time about the blatant disregard for the 30mph speed limit along the straight stretch of Witney Road, in Ducklington, between the roundabout and Chalcroft Close.

To be fair, efforts have been made by Thames Valley Police to look at this potentially dangerous problem which, in my estimation, involves approximately 75 per cent of the vehicles entering or leaving the village. An automatic Speed Indicator Device has been installed twice near the entrance to Moors Close but has been vandalised on both occasions.

More recently a traffic survey device was installed but was placed in the “slower” part of the village and, not surprisingly, did not record a large number of vehicles exceeding the limit. If it had been placed midway along the “straight” a completely different picture would have been shown, an alarming picture which I see every day.

At about 8am-8.15am each weekday, Henry Box School pupils exit Moors Close either on foot or on bicycles and frequently cross the road without looking, while clever, daredevil drivers are attempting the World Land Speed Record until they have to stop at the roundabout.

I hope I am wrong, but, in my opinion, it is an accident waiting to happen.

As for reducing the speed limits, what is the point in reducing them when the existing ones are not complied with or enforced.
