I am writing about your article referring to JD Wetherspoon considering opening a new premises in Abingdon’s old post office.

This, to me, is an excellent proposal, as the town centre can seem dead at times.

Wetherspoon offers very good value for money, both on food and alcohol.

You also carried a mini debate (The Issue, March 28), and having read both sides, I would concur with Tony Goulding of CAMRA, that no pub has closed due to a Wetherspoon pub opening.

Competition is good, and if other pubs find Wetherspoon a threat, they need to look at their own businesses and not blame someone else.

It would ultimately bring people into the town centre, and these people may then shop elsewhere, or even try other hostelries, to see what they offer.

Other coffee shops and cafes will also have to buck up their ideas, as they seem to be in a rut, all charging roughly the same price for a coffee.

I look forward to this new venture, as I suspect will many others.
