now I would be the first to admit that not many things bring a smile to my face concerning Oxfordshire County Council, but reading what Peter Headicar, from the department of planning, at Oxford Brookes University, had to say about Oxford’s transport problems (Oxford Mail, March 21) did give me a laugh.

Everywhere you see a sign saying Oxford Brookes University around this city there is a traffic problem.

Every conceivable parking space is taken up by students’ cars; residents cannot park near their own homes; and entrances and driveways are obstructed.

If you go along Worminghall Road from Wheatley, you see a line of cars a mile long, parked partly on the grass verge and partly obstructing the highway. I believe most of these belong to Brookes students.

Mr Headicar is trying to put the county council to rights on its transport planning, but he, along with his university, is causing many of the problems of congestion and parking.

If he would like to see Oxfordshire’s transport improve, he is in the ideal position – the planning department at Brookes. And he could start by sorting out its own transport fiasco first.

It is time for Brookes to start planning and stop thinking that being a university gives them more rights than the general public. After all, Oxford Brookes is only a technical college and not a university other than by name. Keith Brooks, Gateley, Horspath,
