Sir – The sundry adherents to the quaint faith of atheism don’t seem to appreciate that they are on a hiding to nothing.

Both sides must agree that scientifically there must be a possibility of doubt. So if we religious-minded people are wrong, and no God or gods exist, it won’t matter: we’ll just cease to be. Whereas if the atheists are wrong, they may well be heading for trouble.

Happily for them, however, many religions agree that God is compassionate and merciful: so if they’ve tried to be good little atheists I’m sure that’ll smooth the way for them.
