RECENTLY, I went down to the Thames for an afternoon’s fishing on that delightful reach of the river between Benson weir and Wallingford.

As I was putting my boots on, an individual carrying a black sack of rubbish and a pair of litter tongs walked away from the riverbank and put the sack in his car.

When I walked downstream there was not a spot of litter, which is usually left by the thoughtless and the moronic, to be seen anywhere.

Obviously this person had walked the stretch from Wallingford, clearing litter during his journey.

On behalf of all the walkers and the responsible anglers who use this stretch of river, I thank and salute you. Truly, sir, you are an unknown hero.
