PRISCILLA WAUGH and the working group behind a new social club understandably feel devastated at the arson attack on “their” building.

The dreams of a new centre are in tatters just days after residents in the area agreed a deal to take on a lease of the club in Pinnocks Way.

But amid the frustration and anger they feel today, we hope they remember the motivation behind the whole project — to make their community better.

All vandalism on public buildings (and isn’t it frustratingly repetitive that many of these attacks happen during breaks in school term times?) is mindless and in this particular case there are now fears the entire building will have to be demolished.

You would not blame anyone for walking away from the project.

But that community still needs a new centre, a cornerstone for the neighbourhood.

All the reasons that made this a good idea a week ago still hold true today.

Perhaps they are even more compelling given the arson attack.

So we hope that Ms Waugh and her fellow campaigners will steel themselves and go again – let’s make sure the community rather than the mindless ultimately win.
