IT beggars belief that Keith Mitchell has the nerve to accuse any of his critics of “showing no love for vulnerable people” (Oxford Mail, February 24).

If Mr Mitchell had any concern for vulnerable people, he would not be defending Government cuts with such enthusiasm.

The fact is we appear to have a callous Government, a callous county council and – I am sorry to say – a callous leader of the council, who seem to care little about the harm their policies will do to the old, the sick and the vulnerable.

The human consequences of their cuts appear to be of little concern to them by comparison with the unbridled pursuit of their holy grail of deficit reduction.

Of course we must live within our means, but if the Tories had any real concern for the old, the sick and the vulnerable, they would not be making them bear the greatest burden of deficit reduction. Instead we see cuts targeted at those least able to resist, while bankers, who caused the financial crisis, are allowed to keep their multi-million-pound bonuses.

Keith Mitchell would be well advised in future to refrain from shedding crocodile tears over the consequences for the victims of his callous cuts.
