A POTENTIALLY fatal virus is spreading among dogs on an Oxford estate.

Six animals in Rose Hill have been struck with canine parvovirus and all unvaccinated dogs are now vulnerable to the highly infectious disease.

It attacks the gut and heart muscle and can cause sudden death in puppies. It can also kill older dogs in some circumstances.

Last night, the Oxford Mail’s resident vet, Barton Stephen, urged owners to take action.

He said: “This virus is a killer. Anyone who hasn’t had their dog vaccinated should do so urgently.

“If they think their animal may have the virus, they should take them to the vet.”

The virus is spread from dog to dog by direct or indirect contact with their faeces.

It can also be transported on shoes and clothing and dog owners should disinfect their shoes before and after a walk. They should also clean their dogs’ paws with animal-friendly wipes.

Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, very liquid stools, blood in stools, fever and lack of energy.

The virus can lead to breathing difficulties and irregular heartbeat.

Graham Eagle, public health team leader at Oxford City Council, said: “We’ve received six separate reports of ill dogs in the Rose Hill area and we would urge dog owners to keep an eye on their pets.”
