EYES down for question one: name the first pub in Britain to host a live TV broadcast of a pub quiz?

Locals at the Black Horse Hotel in Thame should have no problem with that teaser in years to come, as TV crews arrive on Tuesday to film an interactive quiz and beam it live across the country.

Launched last October, Pub Heroes Live pits the wits of the nation’s drinkers against each other, and will next week be broadcast live from a pub for the first time.

Previously the show has been hosted from a television studio with live links to the pubs taking part.

Nine pubs in Oxfordshire have already taken part in the show, which is broadcast live on Information TV, with each trying to win £1,000 for their favourite charity.

On Tuesday, regulars at the 18th century Thame inn will battle at the bar with cameramen and TV presenters as it becomes a television studio for one night only.

Landlady of 13 years Maureen Weatherstone, 55, said: “We will be up against about 50 other pubs nationally, from Scotland down to Cornwall.

“The locals like it because everyone in the pub can take part, and when we are clever enough to win, we will be able to give £1,000 to Helen and Douglas House Hospice.

“People who maybe are not in the clique of a pub team and do not think they are good enough may know the answer that everybody else does not, so the whole pub becomes a team.

“This is definitely going to have its place in the pub industry.

“What is good about it is that it is helping pubs get that extra bit of income by bringing people in.

“You can come in, have a pint and a free buffet, join the quiz and see yourself on TV all in one night.”

Other pubs to appear on the monthly show include the Vine Inn in Abingdon Road, Cumnor.

Last month it shared the £1,000 first prize with three other pubs.

Yesterday, staff presented a £250 cheque to Oxenford House nursing home in The Glebe, Cumnor.

Barman Lee Porter said: “We have a few of our regulars who have relatives there or work there, and we wanted to support something right on our doorstep.

“Our customers think the quiz is brilliant.”
