TEACHING is a challenging and complex profession. One approach does not suit all scenarios.

But it appears Wheatley Park School has appreciated the need for greater structure in its approach to pupils’ behaviour.

We commend the school – from the teachers and staff, through to pupils, governors and the parents – for working so hard to get out of special measures.

No-one should accept any school being in special measures because it is an admission that, for whatever reason, the children are being failed at a key time of their lives.

Wheatley Park’s headteacher Kate Curtis says she and staff have “ruthlessly” prioritised what needed to be improved, with a strong focus on planning lessons to include every child. Behaviour has also been a focus by dealing with issues immediately, as well as rewarding achievement and good behaviour.

Most of us will view these as positions the school should have already been taking.

Children need to be included and interested if they are to learn and must know the boundaries of what is acceptable.

But whatever the failings, it is good to see the school recognise the change that was needed and that it has achieved results.
