Pupils smashed their way into the record books after running 100 miles on a treadmill in eight hours and 23 minutes.

Biology teacher Paul Fernandez and the 11 Radley College pupils broke the world record of nine hours and five minutes on Sunday.

The team took turns to run each mile on the machines in the school’s new gym.

The boys, aged from 15 to 18, were George Gundle, Hamish Miller, Oscar Richards, Tom Binnie, Archie Hewlett, Hugh Handy, Andrei Ilie, Robin Eliot, Rory Stahelin, Oliver Williams and Charlie Palmer.

Mr Fernandez, 36, said: “Mechanical failures cost us probably about 12 minutes as we kept overheating the treadmills.”

They raised £3,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support, Helen and Douglas House, Ace Africa and the Radley Armed Forces Fund.
